Matthew S. Henry

Matt Henry is an Assistant Instructional Professor in the Honors College, where he teaches Honors Colloquium and a range of interdisciplinary environmental humanities courses focused on climate change, environmental justice, and the human dimensions of energy systems. His additional areas of expertise include contemporary North American literary and cultural studies, Native American literature and settler colonial studies, race and the environment, postcolonial studies, and U.S. environmental politics.

Matt earned his BA and MA in English from the University of Montana and his PhD in English from Arizona State University in 2018. His forthcoming book, Hydronarratives: Water, Environmental Justice, and Imagining a Just Transition (University of Nebraska Press, 2022), explores how the arts, from literary fiction and performance to landscape architecture and museum exhibits, bolster environmental justice advocacy in water insecure communities in North America. His research has been published in Energy Research and Social ScienceEnvironmental Humanities, and ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and the Environment as well as public-facing outlets like The Conversation and Edge Effects: A Digital Magazine. Since his arrival at the University of Wyoming in 2019, he has also conducted research on just energy transitions and engaged with coal-dependent communities across Wyoming impacted by a shifting energy landscape. Matt is originally from Missoula, Montana, where he grew up hiking, backpacking, fly-fishing, hunting, and running rivers. He continues to enjoy those activities in Wyoming with his wife, Jessica, their two kids, Rowan and Asher, and their seven year-old Catahoula-Schnauzer mix, Abbey.
