Assistant Coordinator, Sports Information

Job Purpose:

Serves as liaison between local, state, regional and national media and the University of Wyoming Athletic Department.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field

Experience:

2 years work-related experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Public relations and communication principles, media and marketing techniques.
  • Writing and interviewing methods, techniques, practices and concepts.
  • Grammatical rules, methods, practices and techniques.
  • University, NCAA, state and federal applicable policies, rules and regulations.
  • Publishing procedures and requirements.
  • Personal computer operation.

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Assist Coordinator in managing the Sports Information Office operations.
  • Communicate and articulate athletic activities and events.
  • Coordinate interviews between student athletes, coaches and media.
  • Provide story ideas to media.
  • Effectively communicate with the media.
  • Use computer applications applicable to area.
  • Manage Sports Information office in the absence of the Coordinator.
  • Write, compose and organize news releases and other printed matter.
  • Interview people.
  • Use grammatical rules effectively.
  • Provide liaison services to the media.
  • Meet project deadlines.
  • Supervise students.
  • Make creative idea contributions for media guides, game programs, and other department publications.
  • Occasionally travel.
  • Work as a team member and foster a cooperative work environment

Characteristc Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Coordinate interviews between media, coaches and student athletes via conference call or in person.
Provide story ideas to local, regional and national media regarding University of Wyoming Athletics.
Manage media services at athletic events by providing an atmosphere for media to work; supervises statistical crews during games and post game interviews.
Manage the Sports Information Office in conjunction with and in the absence of the Coordinator, Sports Information.
Produce news releases, game notes, etc. for sports and sporting events.
Serve as the Sports Information Office liaison with commercial printers, photographers, computer consultants, artists and graphic designers.

Supplemental Functions:

Contribute to creative ideas for media guides, game programs and other department publications.

Working Conditions:

No major sources of discomfort, standard office environment. Occasional travel required.
