Classification Description

Computer Operator, Senior

Reports to: Designated Supervisor

Job Purpose:

Supervises, operates, monitors and maintains security of computer input/output equipment; troubleshoots problems; provides assistance and training to other operators.

Minimum Qualifications


High School Diploma or GED


1 year work-related experience

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration, or Other Requirements:


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Operation of computers and computer input/output equipment.
  • Operation of data communications system consoles.
  • Operation of peripheral equipment.
  • Principles and methods used in obtaining maximum utilization of computer equipment.

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Follow complex oral and written instructions. 
  • Monitor and control job flow and processing sequence.
  • Recreate destroyed computer files.
  • Diagnose and correct system malfunctions.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Move up to 50 pounds regularly, 100 pounds occasionally.

Characteristc Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Supervise, assign and monitor work of Computer Operators scheduled on designated shift.

Maintain computer and peripheral operating documentation.

Refer and/or rebuild job streams terminated by computer or program malfunction.

Analyze and correct routine system malfunctions; provide assistance to system programmer or engineer in resolving complex problems.

Recreate computer files destroyed by computer or program malfunction or consult with appropriate staff member to recreate files.

Respond to user inquiries, analyze problems and refer to the appropriate staff member.

Advise operators; instruct and train in methods and procedures of operating computer systems; check and approve work.

Supplemental Functions:

Assist with operator shift schedule.

Assist with physical planning of equipment.

Maintain inventory of consumable supplies.

Attend in-house training sessions and meetings; may serve as an instructor during some training sessions.

Working Conditions:

Environmentally controlled machine room; regularly exposed to confined spaces, noise, and video terminal displays; occasionally subject to mechanical and electrical hazards.

Please note:

Computer Operator: Under general supervision, operates, monitors, and maintains security of computer input/output equipment and peripheral equipment. Troubleshoots routine problems and refers specific problems/questions to supervisor. 

Computer Operator, Senior: Under limited supervision, operates, monitors and maintains security of computer input/output equipment. Supervises, assigns and monitors work of Computer Operator. Maintains documentation, rebuilds job streams terminated by computer or program malfunctions and recreates computer files. Instruct and train in methods and procedures of operating computer systems.

Supervisor, Computer Operations: Supervises the operational, budgetary, and personnel functions of the Computer Operations area. Manages maintenance contracts for computers and peripheral equipment and makes recommendations software/hardware purchase options. Prepares budget and maintain expenditures, maintains equipment inventory and develop operations and backup procedures documentation. Responds to system failures. Directs installation, modification and testing of new systems software and hardware.
