Greenhouse Assistant

Job Purpose:

Daily care of the plants in the greenhouse.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma or GED

Experience:

None required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Greenhouse environmental systems and operations.
  • Basic knowledge of plant, soil, and insect diseases.
  • Rules and regulations relating to safe chemical, pesticide and herbicide applications.
  • Basic computer software applications.

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Plant and transplant seeds, seedlings, and clippings including inspecting plants, watering appropriately, weeding, cultivating, screening and mixing soil.
  • Maintain greenhouse environmental system and monitor changes to environmental conditions.
  • Recognize plant diseases or insect problems and effectively implement treatment.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Follow instructions.
  • Use basic computer applications for keeping thorough and accurate records.
  • Effectively and safely mix and use chemicals, herbicides and pesticides.
  • Use hand and power tools applicable to the trade.
  • Work as a team member and foster a cooperative work environment.

Characteristc Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Daily watering of plants.

Plant propagation, proper grooming and trimming of plants, fertilizing, soil preparation, pest control.

Oversee computerized controls system.

Provide horticultural advice to faculty, staff, students, and the public. Provide living materials to classes and/or labs.

Maintain aesthetic quality of facility; assist in scheduling facility usage and space allocations.

Assist with updating the website, self guided tour brochure, and further diversify plant collections.

Supplemental Functions:

Standard greenhouse and outside environment; regular exposure to working in confined areas, hazardous chemicals, dirt, dust, noise, fumes and vapors; exposed to regular temperature and climate changes; seasonally subjected to adverse weather conditions when performing outdoor tasks.
