HR Information System Specialist

Job Purpose:

Under limited supervision, provide technical support for the Human Resources information system and other human resources computer applications and systems.  Develop, maintain and provide technical support for HR Training, and for HR Employee Relations, including performance evaluations, recruiting, document imaging and PDQ's.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field

Experience:

2 year work-related experience

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration, or Other Requirements:

None

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Basic principles, methods, and techniques of computer systems and operations of the specific applications in use (or planned) for the Human Resources department.
  • Operation of popular software packages, utility programs, and service aids.
  • Basic computer and/or telecom hardware configurations and capabilities.
  • A wide variety of basic computer software, hardware and peripherals.
  • Human Resources concepts, practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Customer service standards and procedures.Project management principles, practices, techniques and tools.

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Troubleshoot basic computer operations, common software problems and departmental network connectivity problems.
  • Communicate basic technical information clearly and concisely both written and orally.
  • Establish effective working relationships with users, operators, programmers, vendors, and supervisors.
  • Install, maintain, and configure software, hardware and peripherals.
  • Read and comprehend technical information relating to proprietary software, hardware, peripherals, and computer or telecommunications hardware.
  • Design basic spreadsheet and database applications.

Characteristc Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Be the HR Department liaison with IT to develop and to maintain the online performance evaluation system. 

Assist the Employee Relations Manager to manage the performance evaluation process.  Assist with training on how to evaluate performance. Schedule and advertise training on related UW websites. 

Help others develop and create new online courses and post courses from 3rd party vendors.  Update the HR intranet website with any necessary training information.

Assist users in utilization of specific resources on different computing platforms.

Install, setup, and configure software, hardware, and peripheral equipment.

Troubleshoot basic computer operations and network connectivity problems for Human Resources Staff.

Provide technical support for HR systems such as: online recruiting and application process, and for online PDQs.  Manage document imaging, including technical support.

Design and update HR internet sites.

Create complex reports, spreadsheets, and databases as required by the Human Resources Department.

Prepare basic user documentation, maintain appropriate records, and assist in identification, evaluation and recommendation of hardware and software standards or purchases.

Supplemental Functions:

Assist with training and equipment demonstrations; may assist in establishing or modifying basic programs.  Schedule appointments, assist with appeal functions, schedule rooms and catering for trainings and conferences, maintain employee relations files.  Assist with employee relations issues as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Standard office environment; regular exposure to video terminal displays.
