Job Purpose:

Performs routine cashier duties including daily cash disbursement and receipt; balances cash receipts against register tape on a daily basis; works under direct supervision, following procedures and instructions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Basic mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Cashier machines and equipment.
  • Computer basic data entry.
  • Balancing and receipting deposits and payments.
  • Cash handling policies and procedures.

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Effectively communicate.
  • Promote quality customer service.
  • Have manual dexterity to operate a cash register, calculator, typewriter and computer.
  • Read and be able to understand English language sufficient to read and appropriately identify customer checks, identification and similar written materials.
  • Use basic mathematical skills, including addition and subtraction necessary to verify cash register functions, balance cash register, make changes, and verify deposit reports.
  • Check records for accuracy of coding and calculations.
  • Stand and/or sit in confined area and continuously perform essential job functions.
  • Provide basic data entry.
  • Work as a team member and foster a cooperative work environment.

Characteristc Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Receives and receipts a variety of payments and other cash and cash-related transactions using a cash register and/or computer system; prepare and remit correct change.
Prepare cash register and workstation for operations daily; count and balance cash; prepare daily deposit.
Check transactions against account printouts.

Supplemental Functions:

Provide clerical assistance to the department; file, type, answer phones and perform assigned record keeping duties.
Clean and organize associated work area.
May monitor the entrance and exit of customers for security purposes.
May assist customers in locating merchandise.
May assist in restocking shelves, inventory and ordering merchandise, as directed.

Working Conditions:

No major sources of discomfort, standard retail environment. Regularly subjected to working in confined spaces.

Distinguishing Features:

Register Attendant performs routine cashier duties including daily cash disbursement and receipt; balances cash receipts against register tape on a daily basis; works under direct supervision, following procedures and instructions.

Retail Attendant greets and assists customers; prices incoming merchandise; maintains product display including inventory control, restocking, set-up and product mix; may assist with ordering merchandise and processing orders, as directed.

Retail Associate performs all of the duties and responsibilities of the Retail Attendant or Register Attendant, working with increased levels of discretion and independent authority for a retail unit, assisting the department manager in all areas including on-floor control, supervision and training of personnel, and some unit financial responsibility.
