Retail Attendant

Job Purpose:

Provides customer service in a retail merchandise environment; assists customers with location and selection of merchandise or services; maintains product display including inventory control, restocking, set-up and product mix; may assist with ordering merchandise and processing orders, as directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma/GED

Experience:

1 year work-related experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Purchasing and retail merchandising functions and/or ticket sales.
  • Customer service and public relations standards and techniques.
  • Order filling processes and procedures.
  • Credit and return processing methods.
  • Merchandise and services available in university retail settings.
  • Techniques for merchandise ordering from vendors and warehouses.
  • Markup and markdown principles and practices.
  • Invoice verification processes and procedures.
  • Inventory marketing and displaying methods.
  • Planning and scheduling techniques.
  • Postal or commercial shipping methods and procedures.
  • Basic cashiering principles including the acceptance of cash, checks, credit cards, etc. in exchange for merchandise.

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Effectively communicate with diverse populations.
  • Train and monitor student support staff.
  • Assist with cashiering functions, including scanning system keys, look-up codes, traveler's checks, credit cards, etc.
  • Move up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Operate adding machine and/or cash register.
  • Organize and maintain records and merchandise.
  • Analyze and solve problems.
  • Foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Maintain inventory accurate and complete inventory records.
  • Prepare routine administrative paperwork.
  • Work effectively with a wide range of constituencies.
  • Learn and use the operating policies, ordinances, or procedures within the department.
  • Enter data into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device in order to file or retrieve information.
  • Perform arithmetical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Characteristc Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Provide customer service; assist customers in locating, selecting, and purchasing merchandise and/or services.

Fill orders for merchandise and/or services requested by mail, telephone, internet or Interdepartmental Requisitions; place special orders and process credits and returns.

Assist with merchandise and/or ticket returns, buy-backs, and follow-up on shipping/ordering problems.

Unpack merchandise, verify invoices and count, price and stock merchandise; organize, clean, set-up and restock shelves/displays.

Maintain inventory records; record markups and markdowns.

Assist in ordering merchandise from vendors and warehouse.

Process bulk ticket and season ticket sales.

Supplemental Functions:

May provide clerical support for departmental operations, including typing forms and correspondence, maintaining files and entering information on automated system as necessary.

Train and monitor student support staff.

Assist with cashiering functions when necessary.

Working Conditions:

No major sources of discomfort, standard retail sales environment; occasionally subject to warehouse environment.

Distinguishing Features:

Register Attendant performs routine cashier duties including daily cash disbursement and receipt; balances cash receipts against register tape on a daily basis; works under direct supervision, following procedures and instructions.

Retail Attendant greets and assists customers; prices incoming merchandise; maintains product display including inventory control, restocking, set-up and product mix; may assist with ordering merchandise and processing orders, as directed.

Retail Associate performs all of the duties and responsibilities of the Retail Attendant or Register Attendant, working with increased levels of discretion and independent authority for a retail unit, assisting the department manager in all areas including on-floor control, supervision and training of personnel, and some unit financial responsibility.
