Sanitation Truck Operator

Reports to: Designated Supervisor

Job Purpose:

Performs garbage and refuse collection, under general supervision, to maintain the University campus according to established safety and sanitation standards.

Minimum Qualifications


High school diploma or GED


1 year work-related experience driving a hydraulic dump or sanitation truck

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration, or Other Requirements:

Valid commercial driver's license with airbrake designation

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Procedures for heavy equipment operation and for the local landfill operation
  • Hydraulic truck operational systems and controls
  • The occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
  • Current trade methods, materials, preparation and equipment

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Read, understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Read, understand, and follow safety procedures
  • Perform mechanical inspection of truck and packer
  • Use hydraulic operation controls
  • Safely operate sanitation truck and packer
  • Perform equipment lubrication and minor repairs
  • Move objects weighing up to 100 pounds regularly
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Safely and efficiently operate and use associated tools and equipment
  • Work as a team member and foster a cooperative work environment

Characteristc Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Drive refuse collection truck to and from dumpsite.

Lift and dump receptacle contents into truck.

Attach container to truck and operate hydraulic controls to dump contents into truck.

Operate hydraulic packer to compact refuse.

Dump refuse at sanitary landfill by operating hydraulic controls.

Perform mechanical inspection of dump truck and packer on a daily basis.

Perform scheduled lubrication activities and minor repairs as needed.

Supplemental Functions:

Operate snow removal equipment as necessary.

Report damaged and/or unauthorized containers to designated supervisor.

Working Conditions:

Sanitation truck and outdoor environments; regularly exposed to biological, radiation, and chemical hazards found within standard refuse generated by research and teaching activities; subject to adverse weather seasonally.
