Supervisor, Recycling

Job Purpose:

Supervises, plan, coordinate and participates in the University's recycling collection and processing services; manages budgets; recommends changes in policies and procedures; and manages complaints and resolves conflict. 

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma/GED

Experience:

2 years work-related experience

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration, or Other Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Recycling industry.
  • Waste disposal methods and techniques.
  • Safety regulations and procedures.
  • Proper procedures for collection and disposal of recyclables and disposable materials.
  • Disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Project planning for special events and route scheduling techniques.
  • Records retention policies and requirements.
  • Budget management practices and procedures.
  • Equipment and supply purchase procedures.
  • Operation and maintenance of equipment in use in the department.
  • Applicable Federal, State, University and local codes, ordinances, rules and regulation.
  • Supervisory methods and practices.
  • The occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Analyze processes and solve problems.
  • Gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Supervise and train support staff.
  • Travel locally on a daily basis.
  • Maintain effective supervisory relationships.
  • Read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

  • Effectively communicate the recycling program to university personnel.
  • Move materials weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.

Characteristc Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Plan, organize, schedule, participate, supervise and control collection and sorting of disposable and recyclable materials; dispense and market recyclable material; manage the re-sell program for salvageable materials.

Manage budget(s) for area; monitor expenditures and inventory; make purchases as directed; recommend purchases for high cost equipment.

Participate on the Physical Plant Management Team; recommend changes in policies and procedures; manage complaints and resolve conflicts.

Maintain records of material collected, current market prices and expenses, and disposal fees; assist with obtaining and maintaining file of contracts for recycling and disposal services.

Recommend hiring; train, evaluate, discipline, and supervise support staff.

Work in field to pick up and/or deliver recycling materials.  Work in warehouse, operate machinery and provide skilled services as needed to keep recycling operations on schedule.

Supplemental Functions:

Operate a forklift, as needed.

May perform duties of support staff, as required.

May provide budget recommendations for equipment and maintenance needs.

Actively promote and support campus sustainability and recycling

Working Conditions:

Standard office, vehicle and in/out door environments; regular exposure to adverse weather conditions and confined spaces.
