Questions About Leave

Sick leave is given to all benefited employees and if full time you will accrue it at 12 days a year. If not you will accrue it based on your adjusted FTE. Information on how to enter absences or check your balances can be found in the Time / Absences Entry & Payroll Guides.

Vacation leave is given to all benefited employees and if full time you will accrue it based on your position type and months of service. If not you will accrue it based on your adjusted FTE. All employees can accrue a maximum of 352 hours of vacation. Information on how to enter absences or check your balances can be found in the Time / Absences Entry & Payroll Guides.

Compensatory leave can be accrued only by salaried non-exempt employees. Compensatory pay is an equivalent of overtime pay. Anytime an employee works more than 40 hours in a week they will be given time and a half of compensatory time. Family Medical Leave (FMLA) is offered to eligible employees. Employees must be approved by the Benefits office for FMLA. To apply for this approval please fill out the FMLA Request Form. To load this time, after you are approved, you can follow the instructions Requesting an Absence using the code FMLA - Exempt, Faculty, or Non Exempt, depending on your position.

LWOP serves two different purposes. It can be:

  • a requested and approved unpaid leave of absence planned in advance.

  • an absence taken by the employee that did not have accruals to cover the time missed.

Any questions about LWOP please contact your supervisor first. They will be able to send you the right direction.

Benefited employees that have a death of a parent, spouse/partner, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, sibling-in-law, or another member of the employee’s immediate household. Are eligible for use of 12 days of sick and 3 days of bereavement leave. This leave must be used within 60 days of the date of death unless additional time is approved by the Appointing Authority.

Employees are eligible for a leave of absence to go on active duty with the armed forces, voluntarily or involuntarily, during a state of war or declared national or state emergency. Employees should make arrangements with their immediate supervisor to take such leave. No retirement contributions or leave accruals will be lost while an employee is on active military duty. Benefited employees will be granted 15 working days per calendar year of leave with pay for active duty training if such occurs during the employee’s normal work schedule.

Employees of the University of Wyoming who are responsible for firefighting support in efforts to combat extensive fires shall comply with the following:

  • University of Wyoming employees who are activated through the National Guard will be permitted to take the following types of leave: fifteen days of military leave (if not already utilized), emergency leave with pay (up to four weeks), vacation, compensatory time, and leave without pay.

  • Civilian University employees, with prior permission of their divisional Vice President, will be permitted to take the following types of leave: emergency leave with pay (up to four weeks), vacation, compensatory time, and leave without pay. Appropriate documentation of volunteer service will be required.

Leave with pay is available to employees either because of legal duty, voting, or work related leave approved by your appointing authority.

A medical leave of absence may be granted to benefited employees for absences arising from the employee’s illness, injury or pregnancy. This leave may be approved if the employee is not eligible for FMLA leave or has exhausted all available FMLA leave.

Administrative Leave With Pay is mainly used during in an investigation but not exclusively. You will still be paid. If you have any questions about Administrative Leave With Pay please reach out to the UW Benefits Office at HRBenofc@uwyo.edu.
