STEP|Training and Professional Development

The University of Wyoming's Staff Senate and Human Resources department have collaborated in creating the Staff Training and Enrichment Program (STEP).  STEP will offer a consistent training and leadership development program by which the University of Wyoming will beneficially impact the performance and motivation of staff.  Having a well-trained core of supervisors can lead to a more consistent and efficient approach to leadership.

There are some existing resources for training supervisors, managers and administrators. They are online modules available on Human Resources’ website. Some divisions also have opportunities, such as the professional development unit program in Student Affairs. These are self-directed and are not part of a collective program used to provide in-depth training specifically geared towards leadership and management.

STEP uses the StarQuest Leadership and Management program to focus on four learning tracks: Change Management, Development Coaching, Team Development, and Communication Skills. These tracks incorporate workbooks for each learning track, online courseware, reinforcement guides and for the trainers and managers, StarQuest facilitated webcasts, and consulting and coaching services by StarQuest. In addition, STEP will incorporate a support network which includes a half-day learning session each month, facilitated by HR, that offers practice opportunities for each learning track.

This blended learning program combines online training, self-directed learning, and face-to-face classroom experiences. The student will work through the online modules and workbooks at their own pace. Each month, Human Resources will host a development seminar where the applicants will meet for a half-day to review materials in the preceding learning track. They will participate in exercises and role-playing scenarios to apply learned material in a controlled and educational environment. Upon the completion of the four learning tracks, StarQuest will come to the Laramie campus to instruct a final half-day program that will serve as a cumulative review of the program and aid in the final development of the learners.

Schedule:

Orientation - 1/14/14 (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)

Application process:

Human Resources will manage the implementation and will maintain program records. Applicants will complete a packet that includes information about the program, a letter of commitment, an endorsement to be signed by the applicant’s supervisor, and an application form. Participants will be permitted release time for working on program requirements. Release time is not to exceed 12 hours per month, an average of 3 hours per week (note: this may vary based on the geographic location of participant). This program will be available to all benefited University of Wyoming staff members who are in good standing, and are either: non- probationary, or grant-funded staff who have been at UW for at least 1 year.

STEP is intended for those with management responsibilities and who are in positions below director levels. Those staff members who are located outside of Laramie will need to be able to attend the four monthly learning track review sessions and the final half-day session conducted by StarQuest. These sessions will be held on UW’s Laramie campus. However, these may be able to be offered via teleconference.
