The College of Health Sciences: Changing with the Health Professions

Joe SteinerHealth and the health professions are rapidly changing to meet the demands of today's patients/clients. New models of providing affordable healthcare are emerging and being integrated into practice. The Patient Centered Medical Home concept, expanded roles for Practitioners, electronic medical records, and telehealth are only a few of the new approaches. As would be expected, these changes have a direct effect on teaching healthcare professionals.  The University of Wyoming College of Health Sciences is Wyoming's gateway to the health professions. We offer entry level and graduate degrees and post-graduate training in Communication Disorders, Kinesiology and Health, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, and Dental Hygiene. The college also offers minors in health sciences, disability studies, and aging studies; these are suitable complements to degrees in the health professions and other areas of study such as business, education, agriculture, psychology and the pre-health professions studies. If the college does not offer a healthcare education program directly, the college can help facilitate entrance into an out-of-state program through the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education (WICHE) (Contingent on on meeting a Residency Requirement).

More good things are happening in the College of Health Sciences. Not only do we provide excellent education in the health professions, but we have lots of opportunities to do research, to volunteer through our many clubs, organizations, and programs-locally (Check out CHAP or AED), nationally, or internationally (check out or Shoulder to Shoulder program), and learn about the many complex aspects of health care that will facilitate your becoming an exceptional health care provider. And we have an exciting new program called Aspire!, designed to encourage, promote and nurture scholarship, leadership, and professionalism in our future health care professionals, available to a limited number of our students. Check with your program for admission and program information. The College of Health Sciences believes that cultural, social, economic, and geographic diversity is of the utmost importance. We welcome students from all backgrounds and beliefs. We are committed to providing and education of cultural competence. Students graduate from the College of Health Sciences ready to become practitioners in one of the many health professions. The state and nation have had shortages of healthcare providers in the past and this is expected to continue. It is an exciting time to enter a profession and begin a career.
