Wyoming residents have the opportunity to apply for health professional schools in via the WICHE PSEP, WWAMI, or WYDENT programs. All three programs require residency certification by October 15 of the year prior to the anticipated professional school start date. All three programs require a contract with a payback of either 3 years of professional practice in the state or a repayment of funds expended plus interest (veterinary medicine does not require a contract or payback).
There are two parts to the admissions process:
While these two parts are completed in the same time frame, they are not linked and you can do either one before the other.
APPLY EARLY!
We recommend that you establish and maintain a separate email account for this and all of your applications. List all of your schools and certoff@uwyo.edu as safe senders. Be sure to check your junk or spam files regularly.
WICHE
WICHE is a consortium of fifteen western states created to provide educational opportunities for students in the west. It administers three different student exchange programs.
The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) provides opportunities to enroll in an undergraduate program in another WICHE state at reduced tuition.
The Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP) makes distinctive or health-related graduate programs available to Wyoming and other WICHE state residents at reduced tuition. The participating programs are approved by an educational committee and offer a wide range of graduate degrees.
The Professional Student Exchange (PSEP) Program allows certified residents to enroll in certain out-of-state professional programs in dentistry, medicine (allopathic, osteopathic and podiatric), occupational and physical therapy, optometry, physician’s assistant study, or veterinary medicine for Wyoming residents. Wyoming applicants or their spouses must be residents for one year immediately prior to matriculation to professional school. If admitted and offered financial support (support is competitive and not everyone will receive it), students pay reduced tuition based on the costs at the attending institution. The home state pays a support fee to the admitting school for educational services. The length of the support varies according to the professional program.
WWAMI
PLEASE NOTE: WWAMI Interviews for Wyoming residents will occur in Laramie on Jan. 14th through Jan. 17th. In order to give the Univ. of Washington School of Medicine time to review files and make interview offers students should plan on completing their application NO LATER than the 1st of November. Students choosing to complete their application after this date may not receive full consideration.
The University of Wyoming participates in WWAMI, a regional medical education program with the University of Washington School of Medicine. The program annually reserves seats for up to twenty qualified Wyoming residents. Participants complete the first year of medical school at the University of Wyoming in Laramie and the second year in Seattle at the University of Washington. The third and fourth years are spent in clinical sites throughout the WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho). Applicants or their parents must be legal residents for five continuous years immediately prior to attending medical school. Participants make a contract payment to the University of Wyoming for the four years of medical school and the state pays the educational costs to the University of Washington for each student.
WWAMI is the primary means of access for allopathic medical education in Wyoming. Applicants are encouraged to apply to the WWAMI program to study allopathic medicine and to the WICHE PSEP program for osteopathic medicine.
