University of Wyoming

School Application Process

The 2010 University of Wyoming Summer High School Institute (HSI) will be held June 6-26, 2010, on the Laramie campus. Once again the program will provide the opportunity for many of Wyoming's finest students to participate with UW faculty and staff in an enriching university experience.

The program's success begins with your efforts in the schools. Announcing the opportunity to 10th-grade students, encouraging students to apply, and screening applications takes a great deal of time. We appreciate the care and effort you devote to this project.

Student Selection

HSI is an enrichment program for high ability high school students. Nominees should be outstanding 10th-grade students who have many of the following traits, aptitudes, and behaviors:

·         creativity, imagination, and curiosity
·         initiative and motivation
·         communication skills
·         problem-solving skills
·         insight
·         humor
·         enthusiasm about learning and life in general.

To be eligible to apply, students must:

·         be in the 10th grade at a public or private high school in Wyoming;
·         be current residents of Wyoming;
·         intend to return to a Wyoming school for the next term; and
·         be committed to participate fully and remain for the entire three
     weeks of the program (June 6-26).

Application Process for Students

Every Wyoming high school will be provided with HSI student packets. The student packet consists of:

1.                    Student Application Form - The student needs to include a list of honors
             and activities. Both the student and a parent sign this form.
2.                    Letter of Application - The letter should include the reasons for wanting
             to participate AND explanation of what he or she hopes to gain from the
             Institute.
3.                    Essay - Discuss a project or activity that best represents them OR a
             personal experience or event that has made a deep impact.
4.                    Two recommendations - One recommendation must be from a current
             school teacher; the second may be from another high school teacher,
             a counselor, a junior high school teacher, or a youth group leader.

Because so many applicants present strong credentials, THE UNIVERSITY SELECTION COMMITTEE WILL PLACE HEAVY EMPHASIS ON LETTERS AND ESSAYS IN CHOOSING AMONG THE CANDIDATES.

5.   Transcript and Test Scores (if available) Include a copy of a transcript from the first semester of 10th grade. The student will be evaluated on the strength and breadth of work completed, grade point average, and standardized achievement test scores.

School Coordination of Applications

Nominations for the UW Summer HSI should be submitted to UW by principals of Wyoming high schools. In most high schools, one person (such as a counselor or a classroom teacher) is designated to coordinate the applications of interested and qualified 10th graders.

The individual coordinating the high school nomination process should:
  • establish high school due dates for receiving completed applications from students;
  • publicize the HSI;
  • distribute HSI packets to interested 10th graders;
  • determine the total number of nominees allowed for the high school (see the Distribution Chart);
  • screen the applications to determine the best nominees;
  • send the signed "Transmittal Form" and appropriate number of complete applications to the UW Summer High School Institute Office by Friday, February 5, 2010.
  • send a copy of the "Transmittal Form" to the district superintendent so that the district office will know which students have been nominated from your school; and
  • let all applicants know whether their applications are or are not being sent to UW as nominees.
Notification of Participants

It is the responsibility of each school to notify their students if their application was not sent to the UW Summer High School Institute. The students who are nominated by your school will receive notification of the UW selection committee's decision by March 19, 2010.
