The UW Exchange web site uses 128-bit encryption to ensure your personal information is secure. If the browser you are using supports as low as 40-bit encryption you will be allowed access to your email account through the UW Exchange web site. However, UW Information Technology recommends that you use a browser that supports 128-bit encryption.
Popular browsers, such as Internet Explorer and Firefox, indicate secure web pages with a 'closed padlock' icon in the lower border of the browser window. The orange arrow below points to an example of the icon in Internet Explorer. If the icon is absent or an 'open padlock' is displayed, the Web page is not a secure page.
In Internet Explorer, hold your pointer over the closed padlock and the numeric level of encryption of the current web page will be displayed. In Firefox clicking on the padlock will take you to security information for the page.
You can check your current Internet Explorer browser's "cipher strength" (supported encryption level) by clicking Help, About Internet Explorer in the main menu bar.
Microsoft Internet Explorer: find updates and upgrades by using your computer's Start button and selecting the Windows Update icon, or go to the Microsoft Update website.
Firefox: in the file menu go to Help, Check for updates...
