Laptop and Mobile Device Security

While theft is not as common an occurrence at the University of Wyoming as it is at other institutions, theft of laptops and mobile devices is on the rise and students, faculty and staff at UW are not immune.

Here are some suggestions to help you protect your laptop or mobile device:

  • Never leave your laptop or mobile device unattended
  • Record your devices serial number
    • This is vital information to be able to provide police in case your device is stolen
  • Consider purchasing insurance for your device or verifying it is covered under yours or your parents’ homeowner’s insurance
  • Backup all important data daily
  • In the event of a theft, be sure to report it to the UW Police at (307) 766- 5179, or your local law enforcement agency

In addition to the steps listed above, users can also install an open source product named Prey that allows you to track and secure your laptop or other mobile device in case they are lost or stolen. Some of the features of the Prey software are:

  • Track a device with geolocation using the device's GPS or WiFi triangulation
  • Force a lockdown of the device to prevent access
  • Capture screen shots of whatever is currently active on the device
  • Capture images using the web camera of the device
