U.S. Department of State Travel Alert - China (Quarantine Measures for US Citizens)

CDC International Situation Update

UW's Recommended Actions for Study and Travel Abroad (to be modified as situation warrants):

  • The World Health Organization raised the World Pandemic Alert Level to Phase 6 on June 11, 2009. A Phase 6 alert level means that a global pandemic is underway and that there are now ongoing community level outbreaks in multiple parts of world. The Phase 6 pandemic alert level is a reflection of the spread of the virus, not the severity of illness caused by the virus.
  • Please be advised that U.S. travelers may be subject to quarantine measures in other countries.
  • Use common sense and good judgment in formulating and following through on your travel plans.  Take precautions against getting the flu in your home country and during travel.  These precautions include washing hands frequently with soap and water or using hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol content, and using a tissue to cover your mouth and nose during a cough/sneeze and discarding the tissue (and washing your hands) or using your sleeve to cover your nose and mouth during a cough/sneeze.
  • Do not travel if you exhibit symptoms of illness.

UW Students and Faculty Returning From Abroad:

Our Student Health Service provides the following advice to returning students and faculty from all countries with confirmed outbreaks of H1N1/Influenza A:

"It is appropriate for students to monitor themselves for symptoms of flu for 7 days [from return] cough, fever, sore throat, etc.  If any symptoms develop, each should stay at home and call a physician's office to get instructions before going to the doctor's office or ER."

UW Students about to depart on Programs to other affected countries

UW will constantly assess this rapidly changing situation and may take affirmative action on courses going to other affected countries.  However, at this time, no UW courses are affected by the swine influenza outbreak.  Please monitor this site for further news.

Anyone in the UW community about to travel abroad to affected countries should feel free to consult with International Programs if they have any questions.
