Master's International Peace Corps

The University of Wyoming offers a Master's degree in coordination with the Peace Corps. Students acquire educational training for a period of one year, or 24 credit hours, before participating in a 27-month service period involving a Peace Corps project overseas.

Rachel Peterson completed her coursework in Spring 2007 with an emphasis on public health. Rachel interned at the public health clinic in Laramie and will be a Community Health HIV/AIDS Educator in Swaziland.

Degree requirements include taking at least one course in two areas of study: international theory and research. In addition, students are encouraged to specialize in one of two concentration areas: agriculture and non-governmental organization (NGO) administration, or pursue a concurrent major in environment and natural resources. Students also have the option of developing another concentration based on personal experience and interests, although this may be limited by the availability of course offerings.

Internships and employment experience are important

Jeminie Shell (Environment and Natural Resources) was an intern for DUCOR Waste Management in Liberia during Summer 2008. Jeminie's blog describes her internship and experiences in Liberia.

factors for your eventual Peace Corps placement. Our program coordinator will facilitate your finding relevant internship opportunities, or you may want to think about getting some pratical experience in your area of interest even before joining our program

Graduates of the Master's International-Peace Corps Program gain excellent academic credentials in addition to attaining significant experience abroad such as language skills, cross-cultural experiences, and technical training. Upon completion of service, students complete final graduation requirements by returning to the University of Wyoming for the defense of a written thesis based on the field work performed during Peace Corps service.

Students remain actively enrolled as international studies students during Peace Corps service, thus retaining library privileges and an email account. No special funding is available for Master's International students in international studies, however, out-of-state students are able to pay tuition at a reduced rate of 1.5 times the cost of in-state tuition.
