Ruth Bjorkenwall, Assistant Lecturer

Ruth Björkenwall began her studies in social deviance and policing at the Swedish national police academy in 1978. Björkenwall served as a police officer in Stockholm, Sweden, and eventually rose to the position of inspector with the Stockholm PD. She moved to the United States in 1983 and received a B.A. (magna cum laude) in Peace and Conflict Studies in 1990, and a M.A. degree in Sociology in 1994 from the University of California at Berkeley. Björkenwall was accepted to the doctoral program in sociology at UCB with a focus on extreme techniques of influence, social deviance, and social memory. Before accepting a position at the University of Wyoming, she taught at the University of California at Berkeley, Saint Mary’s College, Moraga, and San Francisco State University. At the University of Wyoming, Björkenwall has taught courses for sociology, criminal justice, Honors, and Global and Area Studies. She continues to study international terrorism and has earned certificates from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in emergency management.
