International Studies Tracks

Majors in International Studies concentrate on a pair of 2 tracks: Global & Regional. Global tracks focus studies on issues of governmental, cultural, and economic importance. Regional tracks direct studies towards one area of the world where those issues are of high interest. By combining your regional and global tracks, a student may major in International Studies with a concentration in "Economic Systems of Latin America" or "Culture and Social Issues of Asia and The Pacific Rim".

Global and Regional Tracks have suggested Gateway courses. Most Gateway courses fulfill University Studies requirements. Regional Track Gateway courses, such as INST 2230 Intro to Asian Studies, INST 2240 Intro to African Studies, INST 2250 Intro to Latin American Studies, and INST 2280 Intro to European Studies, all fulfill COM2.

Global Tracks:

  • Governance and Conflict Resolution
  • Economic Systems
  • Culture and Social Issues
  • Sustainable Development and the Environment

Regional Tracks:

  • Africa and The Middle East
  • Asia and The Pacific Rim
  • Europe and the former Soviet Union
  • Latin America

International Studies advisers guide students towards many courses across campus to paint from a diverse palette of coursework. Many departments on campus offer courses in their disciplines that fulfill requirements for each track. For example, an International Studies major might be able to use AGEC 3860: World Food & Agriculture to fulfill a requirement for their global track in Sustainable Development. You can see why INST majors boast about the interdisciplinary nature of their program!

Use the links above to look deeper into some of the alternatives that International Studies students have used in the past to define their course requirements. Note also that because course availibility changes constantly some of these options may be replaced by newer opportunities--check the current schedule to see which fresh courses are being offered!
