Asian Studies Minor Course Requirements


Foreign Language (12 hours)

Twelve (12) hours of an Asian foreign language. "Asian" languages at UW include Japanese, Chinese and Arabic. Language study may be fulfilled by language instruction at UW, other in-country summer intensive programs, or language-focused study abroad programs, and need not necessarily be limited to the three languages currently taught at UW. In the case of language courses taken outside of UW, the Asian Studies Minor Committee shall have final authority to determine the applicability of those programs and courses to satisfy this component of the Asian Studies Minor.

Area Courses (9 hours)

Students are required to take one course each from the areas of Asian History, Asian Politics and Society, and Asian Culture for a total of nine (9) hours. Upper-division foreign language credit that has not been used to satisfy the foreign language requirement can be used to substitute for one or all of the required area courses.

Elective Upper Division Requirement (3 hours)

Three (3) upper-division (3000/4000-level) hours from any of the curriculum areas. The course used for this requirement can not have been used to satisfy an area course requirement.

Study Abroad/Capstone Requirement (3 hours)

Three (3) hours completed in study abroad in some part of Asia, or completion of an Asia-related departmental capstone course.
