Topics covered include the common law roots of wildlife law; inter-sovereign authority (state, federal, tribal) with respect to conservation, game management, and habitat protection; biodiversity; environmental ethics; and climate change adaptation.  We will spend considerable time studying the major federal statutes: Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and Lacey Act. Throughout the course, we will consider the public policies underlying various aspects of wildlife law.
