Civil Legal Services Clinic

Student Clinic Director: Joel Defebaugh

Joel Defebaugh is a native of Casper, Wyoming. He attended the University of Wyoming for his undergraduate degree in Political Science, graduating in 2013. While at UW, Joel has excelled in leadership roles, serving as ASUW president, an orientation leader, an admissions representative to new incoming students, as well as a student ambassador.

After serving as an intern for Wyoming Senator John Barasso in Washington, D.C., Joel was drawn to law school by his strong passion for legislation and government, as well as an interest in policy.

While in law school, Joel has continued to excel. As a 2L, he was selected to be one of the student attorneys in the 2017 Spence Law Firm Historical Trial where he demonstrated his impressive litigation skills. He also served as the 2L intern in the Civil Legal Services Clinic, which helped to hone his courtroom skills with hands-on experience.

He was drawn to the Civil Legal Services Clinic in particular because he wanted to be challenged in multiple areas of the law as well as to provide a service to the state and help people who would otherwise not have access to legal resources. The Clinic also afforded Joel the opportunity to utilize his leadership skills, as well as develop new ones.

"As Student Director, I value the experience of helping to manage student interns and our case load," he says. "The best part of the clinic experience is when we can apply the law we know to real people in real situations. It's fun to see my peers get excited when they realize the positive impact we have on our client's lives. The clinic has prepared me in a way so that I feel comfortable entering the practice of law after graduation because I've had real experience."
