In her presentation, Dr. Goen-Salter will examine some beliefs about “remediation” that surround work with underprepared college students. She will draw from her many years directing San Francisco State’s Integrated Reading and Writing program to challenge some widely-held truths and to suggest a set of necessary conditions for improving students’ retention and success during the crucial first-year of college.
The Reading Institute was co-sponsored by LeaRN (Learning Resource Networks) and College Reading & Learning Association.

As literacy habits evolve with the explosion of technology, adolescent reading practices and preparedness for 21st century jobs become key issues for teachers. Building on discussions at the 2008 and 2009 Teaching Writing in Wyoming colloquiums, this institute will offer helpful information on current reading practices and pedagogical strategies for teachers across disciplines.
Participants will engage with national as well as local experts and have many opportunities to discuss effective practices for readers of varying levels of preparedness. Discussions will center on creating connections across disciplines and levels. This event will be particularly focused on high school and early-college instruction, although all are welcome!
The Reading Institute was co-sponsored by LeaRN (Learning Resource Networks), Ellbogen CTL and Wyoming School-University Partnership.
