College Skills Workshops

College Skills Workshops:

  1. The topics covered in these sessions should be both relevant to the topic of your FIG as well as make sense with the timing of the semester
    • For example, students in the Criminal Justice FIG wouldn’t need to learn how to reserve practice rooms in the Fine Arts Building, but for students in the Music Avalanche FIG, that would be very helpful.
    • Also, it wouldn’t make sense to do an session on meeting with your advisor the first week in September, but it would make sense to hold that session in mid to late October.
  2. Consider offering snacks at your sessions (can be arranged through your RC or through Makayla)
  3. Weigh whether or not the Fishbowl is your best option; it’s convenient for students but there is a lot of potential distractions and noise.  The Business Building is close and quiet…
  4. If there is a topic that your students want to know more about, but you don’t feel qualified to cover it, bring in a guest speaker.
  5. Collaborate with your fellow FIG RAs.  If there is a topic that makes sense for students in multiple FIGs to learn about, work together to offer the session to more students.
  6. These sessions don’t have to be lectures.  You can make these sessions fun and interactive.  Come up with a game to help students learn key terms for an exam.  Take your students on little field trip to the library or Ross Hall to show them where they can get tutoring.
