Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Wyoming! Here at Housing, Dining, and Residence Life, we strive to create an inclusive living and dining environment. As a first-year student, you are required to live in the Residence Halls and we are here to help make your transition as smooth as possible!
The Residence Halls offer a diverse and exciting experience you will appreciate for the rest of your life. As a student, you have various choices to choose from when it comes to residence hall living at UW. There are six residence halls on campus, and you can choose from different living styles. Each type of housing has its own unique set of features and prices.
To learn more about the Residence Hall Housing Contract and application process, we encourage you to read through our Contract Chronicles below.
*Dining Dollars are per semester and can be used at campus dining locations, vending machines, and at Washakie Dining Center.
**A Block Plan is for those who have irregular schedules. You pay for the TOTAL amount of meals you want per semester. Eat as much or little as you need during the week.
Please Note: Residence hall students are required to select one choice for housing and one choice for dining. Please read your Contract and Terms & Conditions carefully for detailed information about your contract and payment options. Dining Dollars can be used at campus dining locations, vending machines, and at Washakie Dining Center.
To understand your living options, you will want to read the information on this website carefully. Then you should complete the Housing & Dining Services Contract online. Please contact us if you have questions or concerns about the contract process.
An application fee of $100 plus a housing deposit fee of $150 ($250 total payment) must be paid to complete your Housing & Dining Services Contract. The application fee is non-refundable; the housing deposit fee will apply to your first-semester room charges in the residence halls.*
Complete your contract as soon as possible -- especially if you want a single room or a special/academic interest floor, because they fill up quickly and are assigned on a date priority basis.
*If you decline enrollment before May 1, the $150 housing deposit is refundable. Cancellations or deferments after May 1 will forfeit the entire $250 remittance.
Students can select their own room space based on their application preferences. Room selection occurs in July. Once your application is complete, please watch your UW email for additional information in the early summer. If you do not complete the room selection process, a room will be assigned in late July based on availability.
If you pay rates for a double room but remain the single occupant when vacancies occur, you will be given a few options for consolidation. If you wish to continue paying the double occupancy rate, you may:
Choose another resident to move in with you.
Move in with another resident of your choice who doesn't have a roommate (ask your Area Coordinator for a list of residents also needing roommates)
Allow the housing staff to assign you a roommate.
If a student fails to accept an assigned roommate, disciplinary actions and additional charges may be assessed.
Students with disabilities who need special equipment supplied to their rooms or required handicap-accessible rooms should contact Disability Support Services at (766-6189) as soon as possible. You should fill out the contract according to your needs. Attach further information to your contract if necessary.
Setting expectations early can ensure the best possible roommate experience. Roommates will receive a checklist of discussion points to talk over during their first days on campus, but if you and a friend are interested in rooming together, take a few moments to discuss the following before you submit your applications:
What time do you think you'll generally go to bed?
How do you feel about borrowing/using each others' belongings?
How will you handle visitors?
Do you plan to study regularly in your room or prefer to study elsewhere?
If you do choose to room with a friend, it’s important to follow these steps:
You must select the other on your Housing & Dining Services Contract and include each other’s student W number.
Roommates should complete their Housing & Dining Services Contract before July 1st. After this date, space is limited, and it may not be possible to be placed together
Requested roommates who are in different Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs) will not be able to room together.
If you have a friend who will also attend UW with whom you wish to room, please request that person on the contract when you apply. Remember, you must both request each other as roommates.
Should one roommate change plans, a new roommate will be assigned. You may request a change by letting the Housing, Dining, and Residence Life office staff know of your request in writing. Please send an e-mail to living@uwyo.edu. Roommate requests cannot be guaranteed; however, we will make every effort to accommodate your request.
During the first two weeks of the fall semester, student requests to move to other rooms, floors, and halls will be restricted to emergency situations only. A date-priority listing will be used to notify you of vacancies. You must check out your current residence hall room with your Resident Assistant and complete a change of status form and room condition sheet before moving to the new room/hall assignment.
All students with a completed 2023-2024 Housing & Dining Services contract.
All students can select their own rooms in the residence halls.
Tentative dates for the room selection process can be found below. After these dates, students who submit their contracts will have their room assignments automatically allocated by the housing staff.
Students can select their rooms by logging back into the online housing portal and completing the room selection page (don’t worry, this page does not open until you complete your contract and are assigned a room selection timeslot by housing staff).
This gives students more autonomy to select their rooms and roommates for the upcoming academic year. Interested in a Living Learning Community (LLC)? Take a look at where these communities will be placed!
After you complete your 2023-2024 Housing & Dining Services contract, you will become eligible to select your own room for the upcoming academic year; however, you will not be able to select your room until you receive a timeslot from the housing staff. The preferences determine room selection timelines and available spaces you select on your contract, and the date you completed your contract. (see below for a complete list of timelines).
You will receive an email roughly one week before your assigned timeline with more detailed information regarding the room selection process. Please remember that all communications will go directly to your UW email address, so please check that account this summer. If you are having trouble accessing your UW email, please go to WyoWeb and click on "Obtain Username and Initial Password" or "Password Reset Portal," or you can contact the UW IT Client Support Help Desk.
Please remember that because room space availability is also determined by Housing & Dining Services contract preferences, a late room selection timeslot does not mean you cannot still get the room space you want! Students will only see floors and rooms they are eligible for and/or are part of communities they request on their contracts.

Those exempt from the requirements to live on campus may cancel their academic-year contract before August 12, 2023. Students who applied for the spring semester only must cancel before the first Tuesday in January. All cancellations must be in writing. The application fee is non-refundable. Contract cancellations after August 12, 2023, must be completed through the Contract Release process (see below). The Director must approve any exceptions to this policy of Housing or his/her designated administrator.
Exemption forms are available online. On page two of the housing contract, you have the option to complete either the housing contract or the exemption from first-year living. Select the exemption option and complete the remaining steps.
You will receive written notice when your exemption has been reviewed.
After August 12, 2022, you must be officially released, in writing, from your Housing & Dining Services Contract to discontinue room and Dining Plan charges. Procedures for release are available in the Housing, Dining, and Residence Life office. Requests for release must be completed and submitted to the Director of Housing for review and response. This policy may be appealed under guidelines established by the President or his/her designee. Failure to use the room and/or Dining Plan does not automatically release you from this contract and its financial obligations.
Those exempt from the requirements to live on campus, prior to the contract start date, may choose to terminate this contract by paying 50 percent of the remaining financial obligation of room and dining plan charges for the academic year. Please visit your residence hall coordinator for additional information regarding this process. The application of this policy may be appealed under guidelines established by the President or his/her designee.
If you are evicted from the residence halls for disciplinary reasons, you may be responsible for paying all outstanding room and Dining Plan charges. Eviction may take place immediately upon notice.
If you are evicted from the residence halls or dining services for non-payment of contract charges but remain enrolled at the University of Wyoming, you are responsible for paying all remaining room and board charges for the contract period and properly checking out of your residence hall. Eviction may take place immediately upon notice.
If you withdraw or are suspended from the University, you must initiate the process with the Office of Student Life and officially check out of your residence hall within 24 hours of the withdrawal date. Room and meal plan charges will be prorated based on proper completion of the Contract Release form and a proper residence hall room checkout. Please see your residence hall coordinator for a copy of the contract release form. The unused portion of the room and Dining Plan charges will be credited to your account and will be based on the date you officially checked out of your residence hall.
If you cancel your contract due to graduation, exchange programs, student teaching, and/or internships outside of Laramie, Wyoming, you will have your contract terminated.
