Residence Halls at UW

Looking to live in the Residence Halls at the University of Wyoming? Here at Housing, Dining, and Residence Life, we strive to create an inclusive living and dining environment. As a first-year student, you are required to live in the Residence Halls and we are here to help make your transition as smooth as possible!

The Residence Halls offer a diverse and exciting experience you will appreciate for the rest of your life. As a student, you have various choices to choose from when it comes to residence hall living at UW. There are six residence halls on campus, and you can choose from different living styles. Each type of housing has its own unique set of features and prices. On top of that, we also offer an abundance of Living Learning Communities as well as summer and winter housing options for those that need it!

Summer & Winter Housing

The residence halls close for all residents at noon on Saturday, December 17, for winter break unless approved to remain in Winter Break Housing (see below).  Students leaving for winter break and returning for the spring semester are welcome to leave items in their rooms over break.  Room access will not be available during this time, so be sure to take everything you need until you return in January.

Winter break housing is available in the residence halls. You must have a current Academic Year residence hall contract or have completed a spring residence hall contract to be eligible for winter break housing.  An application must be completed if you require housing at any time during winter break.

Washakie Dining Center is closed during winter break.  All break residents are responsible for their own meals during this time.

Summer break housing will be available in the residence halls between May 13 – August 5, 2023.  Residents who do not have a Fall 2023 housing contract will be required to vacate by August 5.

If you would like to apply for summer housing, please complete the online application, which will be available by April 1.  In it, you can indicate your dates of stay and select a summer meal plan.  Summer housing placement will be in single-occupancy rooms.  To be eligible for occupancy in the University residence hall facilities, you must enroll in a University course or program during the summer, the preceding spring, and the following fall semester.  All individuals who stay longer than a week (7 concurrent days) must participate in a dining plan.  Charges apply to summer housing based on length of stay and meal plan.  These summer charges bill to the student’s University account.

New Student Live-In Policy

Residential living is a valuable experience. Research conducted on a national level indicates that students who live in the residence halls are more likely to stay in school and graduate and are generally more satisfied with their college experience. Data collected by the University of Wyoming shows that first-year students living on campus earn higher grade point averages than off-campus students.

To help you maximize your potential, the UW Trustees have established a policy requiring newly admitted students to live in UW residence halls during their first academic year on campus and to contract for a minimum of a 12-access-per-week dining plan.

There are a few exceptions to this policy as defined by the Board of Trustees.

Exemption forms may be completed online through the Housing & Dining Services contract portal.  You will receive written notice when your exemption has been reviewed. You must apply for exemption prior to 4:30 p.m. on August 12, 2022. For spring semester only contracts, exemption applications must be submitted prior to 5:00 p.m. on January 6, 2023. Students may not be granted an exemption after these dates, even if they meet the criteria listed below.

Possible reasons for exemption include:

  • The student is 21 years of age or older

  • The student's graduation date from high school (or date student obtained General Education Development (GED) credential or other approved alternative education credentials) is at least 24 months prior to the first day of classes of the student's first academic year at the University of Wyoming.

  • Student is married

  • The student is a single parent with custody of a child

  • The student plans to live in Laramie (or within a 60-mile driving distance from Laramie) with parent(s), grandparent(s), sibling(s), or legal guardian(s)

  • The student will live on the property in Laramie (or within a 60-mile driving distance from Laramie) purchased by parent(s) or legal guardian(s) while attending UW

  • The student has completed two semesters as a full-time student, or the equivalent credit hours (non-concurrent to high school), at a prior university or college (24 credit hours)

  • The student has a medical condition that is directly related to living in the residence halls and/or eating in Washakie Dining Center (student must provide documentation – reviewed and decided upon by Disability Support Services – which explains why the condition cannot be accommodated by the residence hall or dining room facilities)

If you are a transfer student with a minimum of 24 credit hours earned non-concurrent to high school – you do not have to complete an exemption form.  If you would like information about living on campus, check out our residence hall living options or the UW On-Campus Apartments
