 Master of Arts in English Program Requirements
These program requirements can be tailored to meet students' interests and career goals.
26 Hours of Course Work
- A 4-hour course in Contemporary Theory.
- A 1-hour course in Bibliography and Research Methods.
- 4-hours of classes in each of the following categories: period, author, genre and approach.
- 9 hours of elective course work.
- Most coursework should be at the 5000 level, a student may include no more than two 4000 level classes in their program.
- With the permission of their advisor, students may take three credit hours outside of the department to meet their program requirements.
Reading List Exam
- A two hour oral exam taken at the beginning of your third semester.
- You will be examined over works from three of the following categories: period, author, genre and approach.
- You will choose two faculty members to serve on your examining committee and generate your reading lists in consultation with them.
- The MA director will assign a third faculty examiner to your committee.

Thesis
- Four hours of ENGL 5960: Thesis Research
- Meet with your thesis committee for approval of your thesis proposal by the end of your third semester.
- An oral defence and approval of your completed thesis.
