Materials science and engineering is a multidisciplinary field involving collaborations across traditional academic programs.  The Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) program at the University of Wyoming brings together students and faculty with research interests and expertise in materials science and engineering from physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Current strengths at UW include nanotechnology, new materials synthesis, advanced materials characterization, as well as computational methods for materials design.  Through a weekly seminar series, a set of core courses and electives, as well as access to a broad range of sophisticated instrumentation, the MSE program provides a rich, collaborative research environment for graduate students, research scientists, and faculty.

Currently, there are four main areas of emphasis within the core members of the program: energy, biomaterials, nanomaterials, and electronic materials. Several MSE faculty members are affiliated with UW's Center for Photoconversion and Catalysis, a center of excellence within the School of Energy Resources, whose research emphasis is on solar energy, fuel conversion, and fuel cell technologies. In addition, faculty members are supported by the biomedical UW INBRE program, an NIH funded center which sponsors biomaterials related research projects, graduate assistantships, and undergraduate research fellowships.
