About Dr. Ipina

Professor Lynne Ipina started her career studying problems in transonic fluid flow, using asymptotic models she learned from her Ph.D. adviser, Cathleen Morawetz. That early work from her dissertation improved the available estimates for drag on an airfoil in the presence of weak shocks. The work involved computational models and theoretical work on the well-posedness of the Tricomi problems that arose in the mapping variables.

Dr. Ipina is best known for her work in Math Education. Her early participation in  the national debate Calculus, especially as it involves writing and appropriate uses of technology,  evolved into an interest in graphical representation.  She and  Gilda Palis used APOS models on classroom research and curriculum design.

The last five years she has focused almost exclusively on the middle level teacher.  She is one of the co-PIs on the NSF grant that launched UW's Master Program, and Endorsement Program for in-service middle level teachers.
