Secondary Education|Math Concentrations

Curriculum for Secondary Education

This concentration is intended for prospective secondary (grades 6-12) mathematics teachers. The math requirements are identical to those of the Secondary Mathematics Education Major offered by the College of Education. In cases where there is an option, the starred course is the recommended one.

17 hours of Math Core: MATH 2200, 2205, 2210, 2250, 2800

3 hours of Programming : COSC 1010 or 1030

3 hours of Foundations: MATH 3000 or 3200*

3 hours of Probability and Statistics: Math 4250 or Stat Elective*

3 hours of Applied Math: MATH 4300

3 hours of Algebra: MATH 3500* or 3550

3 hours of History: MATH 4000

3 hours of Geometry: MATH 4600

3 hours of Secondary Math: MATH: 4150

6 hours of Math Electives: (2) MATH 2310 or 3000+

Total Hours: 48

In order to meet Wyoming teacher certification standards, you also need to take courses from the UW College of Education.  You must declare a major in Mathematics Secondary Education (MSEC) and be advised by a College of Education advisor prior to enrollment in Professional Education courses. A concurrent major is a single degree program consisting of a B.A. degree from the College of Education, with majors in Secondary Education and in Mathematics. This program of study meets the “highly qualified” criteria under the federal No Child Left Behind legislation. A minimum UW Total Institution GPA of 2.50 is required to change your major to Education and your GPA must be at least 2.75 to enter Phases II and III of the Wyoming Teacher Education Program. Your mathematics content grade point average must be at least 2.50 in order to enter Phase III (Methods and Student teaching) of the WTEP.

Wyoming Certification Requirements:

Instructional Technology:  3 hours of ITEC 2360

Educational Studies: 15 hours of EDST 2450, 2480, 3000, 3550

Special Education: 3 hours of EDEX 2484

Secondary Education: 6 hours of EDSE 3271, 4271

Secondary Education: 15-16 hours of EDSE 4500 (Student Teaching)
