Department of Management and Marketing

PhD Student Research

Shikha Upadhyaya is a student in the Marketing and Sustainable Business Practices Ph.D. program at the University Of Wyoming College Of Business. Shikha completed her first undergraduate degree (BBA) from Kathmandu University, and second undergraduate degree (BSBA) and MBA from Colorado State University-Pueblo. During her professional involvement in the assessment of social sustainability implications of marketplace practices in both US and Nepal, Shikha became very interested in understanding unique experiences that individuals from different socioeconomic backgrounds face while navigating the marketplace. Shikha has continued to explore these questions associated with marketplace constraints and opportunities that marginalized individuals experience and navigate. Particularly, in her dissertation, Shikha explores the spatiotemporal dynamics associated with the marketplace experiences (of constraints and opportunities) of marginalized individuals, and the theoretical as well as practical implications of these experiences on the marketplace.

Shikha’s research on the marketplaces and intersectional experiences in the developing country of Fiji has been supported by the 2014 Association for Consumer Research (ACR) and Sheth Foundation Doctoral research grant, 2013 UW Social Justice Research Grant, and 2013 Dick and Lynne Cheney Fellowship for Excellence in Study Abroad. Along with her doctoral dissertation committee chair Dr. Jose Antonio Rosa and committee member Dr. Susan Dewey, Shikha has developed a program of research that combines the theory of intersectionality and spatiotemporal dynamics associated with the marketplace. In collaboration with the faculty and students, Shikha has also published in the Journal of Macromarketing with manuscripts under review in top-level marketing and anthropology journals. Shikha has also presented at national and international conferences. Shikha values the intellectual rigor shared by the faculty members and doctoral students at UW COB that has been instrumental in the development of her scholarly aptitude, and looks forward to sharing her experiences as she moves ahead with her professional pursuits.
