Yan Zhang was born in Harbin, China. She holds Bachelor degrees in both Education Pedagogy, and Economics and Management, as well as a Master's degree in Political Science. Before teaching at University of Wyoming, she was a lead instructor at CET Academic Programs.  Concurrently, she worked at the CET-FSI (Foreign Service Institute) Program as a Conversation and Business Chinese instructor.  In 2002, she was invited to come to UW to build up the Chinese program.  In addition to teaching regular Chinese language courses, she is also the director of UW summer Chinese study abroad program.  She also has given many lectures and seminars at various international conferences and symposia. Yan Zhang also has written two textbooks, Learning Chinese Step by Step (I and II) (Heilongjiang People Press, 2004)  She is a recipient of the Extraordinary Merit Award for Teaching, the Thumbs-up Award, and the Top Professor award from the Mortar Board.
