Applying to Our Graduate Programs

Applicants must submit:

  • A letter of application indicating the reasons for their interest in their purpose and the course of study they are interested in pursuing.  An indication of future career goals is also useful. 

  • Official copies of undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or graduate transcripts demonstrating previous coursework in the languages of the degree program to which they are applying.

  • Three (3) letters of recommendations from those who know well their preparation for their intended graduate course of study.

Additional Requirements for MA Spanish Program:

  • A letter of application should be written in the applicants’ non-dominant language: if the applicant is a Spanish native speaker, the letter should be written in English; if the applicant is an English native speaker, the letter should be written in Spanish.

  • Official copies of undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or graduate transcripts demonstrating previous coursework in Spanish, an undergraduate degree in Spanish or related field is required.

  • An Oral Proficiency Interview is necessary if English is not your first language: ESL International Grad Student Test

  • TOEFL iBT scores if applicant is international student showing a minimum score of 111/120

Other Important Information

  • MCL recommends a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 111/120 for international students. Currently, no GRE score has been set for applicants. If you have taken this examination, please include your score in your application, and we shall take them into consideration.

  • Applicants are more likely to succeed as students and instructors provided they have achieved an ACTFL proficiency rating of Advanced Low in the language of the degree program to which the applicant is applying as well as English. Faculty in the degree program will interview prospective applicants online to determine that they possess sufficient proficiency in the language and in English to be successful in their course of study.

  • Proficiency in oral Spanish, as conducted by phone interview: Non-native English speaking applicants should achieve an ACTFL proficiency rating of Advanced Low in Spanish and English. A faculty member will interview prospective applicants online to determine that they possess sufficient proficiency in the language and in English to be successful in their course of study.
