The Lab now has 14 operational computers to run CD-ROM and DVD programs for beginning language classes.
The department runs two traditional language lab units comprising 26 booths, which are part of Sony's LLC-4500 System, featuring a unique, one sentence repeat-program. The machines also record the student's voice both for practice and for comparison with the native speaker. The system is computer-compatible.
The lab units see their most intensive use in first-year instruction in German, Spanish, French, Japanese and Russian. Each first-year class allots at least one hour weekly for lab practice. The department employs undergraduate language majors as lab attendants for about 50 open lab hours each week. This allows students to use the facility at their convenience and practice on their own. The facility is also used by foreign students studying English.
Language tapes and CDs are prepared every week on high-speed duplicators for good listening quality. In addition, students may use departmental computers for extra practice in language skills. The department continually acquires valuable new software for these purposes.
New equipment also allows the department to play US and foreign
format DVDs and to transcribe and play US and foreign format video tapes
for individual use or during scheduled instructional film programs in
the video theater.
