Undergraduate Language Major

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages offers coursework leading to a bachelor's degree with majors in French, German, Russian and Spanish, or concentrations for the bachelor's degree in humanities and fine arts. It also offers coursework in Chinese, Classical Civilizations, Greek Latin, Japanese and Literature in Translation. Those considering majoring in a language should seek help from their advisers to work out a coordinated study program.  For course offerings during a specific semester, please click under the Class Schedule for the desired semester, then "Course Offerings", then "A&S", and then the desired Language.

All language majors must take 30 (French = 31, Spanish Linguistics =33) semester hours of work beyond 2030 (third semester).

German in-residency requirement: German majors need to take 3 of the following 6 courses to meet the in-residency requirement: GERM 4100, 4110, 4145, 4240, 4230, 4265.

Highly recommended are: SPAN 3080 (Spanish in the USA) and SPAN 4080 (4th Year Spanish)

It is possible to take one class from the following: SPPA 3160 (Speech and Language Development); ANTH 4775 (Language and Gender), ANTH 4785 (Language and Racism); ANTH 4795 (Language Change).

Course Descriptions

Humanities/Fine Arts Majors

Students in the Humanities/Fine Arts major wishing to complete a language component should take classes 2040, 2140 and 3050 in the given language. The department strongly recommends an additional area of concentration, such as a second foreign language, English, fine arts, philosophy, history, a social science or a science.
