Language Placement and Credit by Exam

Do you need to take a foreign language at UW?
•    College of Arts & Sciences major requirement
•    You have an interest in taking language courses
•    You are double majoring in a language
•    You add a language as a minor
•    International Engineering major

How do you know which class to sign up for?
•    NEVER taken foreign language before => sign up for the introductory class level 1010
•    COLLEGE CREDIT or AP in foreign language => consult your Transfer Credit Evaluation on WyoWeb and register for the next semester in the sequence (if desired)
•    HIGH SCHOOL classes => you must be placed

How can you be placed?

1.    WebCAPE Online Placement Exam- Complete from any computer, any time!
This option does not provide you with academic credit, nor does it show that your language requirement has been met.  The Webcape does help ensure that you enroll in the correct level of the language and will help get through prerequisites depending on your test score.   You can take this exam for Spanish, German, or French. It can only be taken once.

The Placement Exam is offered online for a $10 fee.
-Go to
-Click on “Register for CAPE Exam” under “Students” on the left side of the screen.
-Under “Select your organization” be sure to select “University of Wyoming.”
-Enter personal details and credit card information and submit.

You will be placed according to the scores shown here:

Semester Spanish German French
1 below 204 Below 263 Below 218
2 204-288 263-340 218-306
3 289-355 341-410 307-373
4 356-434 411-483 374-437

2.    Credit by Exam (CBE) -- Taken on the UW Campus
Students may receive up to 12 hours of academic credit by examination. The exam also places students in their correct language level.  For example, say your major requires two semesters of a single foreign language and after taking the CBE you learn that you earned credit for the first semester of the language.  This means that if you earned 4 credit hours that will appear on your transcript and have been placed into the second semester of the language.  Therefore, after completing that single semester of foreign language at UW, your requirements will be met. Note that you can’t take the CBE if you have any college or AP credit in the language.  Depending on your major either 8 hours or 12 hours of a foreign language are required.  There are exceptions, please check with your advisor in the department of your major to confirm.

The foreign language CBE is offered on campus through the Department of Modern Languages.  The exam can be taken during summer orientation sessions or during established dates/times in the languages department at the beginning of each semester, the exam is also administered by appointment with the Modern and Classical Languages department administrator.  Please email or call 307-766-4177 for details.  When you are on campus and ready to take this exam, you’ll need to first visit the Office of the Registrar in Knight Hall to obtain an approved application form.  A fee of $80 must then be paid at the Cashier’s Office.  Take the application form, the receipt of fee payment, and a photo ID with you to the languages department to schedule an appointment for taking the exam.  When you come for your exam appointment, please do not forget to bring a credit card.  The online registration process for the exam, which is administered by BYU, requires that you pay by credit card an additional $50 fee to BYU.

You will receive your test results approximately two weeks after taking the CBE.  We offer CBE for forty-nine languages including Russian, Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Arabic, and Mandarin (both Simplified & Traditional).

Credit by Exam is available during Spring, Summer and Fall Semester by appointment.

Please call 307.766.4177 or send us an email to

Note that, per University policy, you may not earn credit by examination where you already have college credit at the same level or above. For example, if you already have college credit posted for a second semester course, you may receive credit hours by examination for the third semester, but not for the first and second.
