  1. Submit the Application and pay the $50.00 application fee. The application fee cannot be waived.
  2. Upload all official transcripts (undergraduate and post-graduate). If you are a UW graduate, please upload your unofficial transcript.
  3. A minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required.
  4. Upload your resume.
  5. Upload your Letter of Interest (2000 words or less)
    1. Respond to: Why do you wish to pursue a graduate degree in Public Administration?
  6. Upload your Analytical Writing Response (2000 words or less)
    1. Respond to: For some time, police officers on three adjacent beats have met each other for a coffee break at a restaurant near a point where the three beats intersect. They usually have coffee and a donut and occasionally a piece of pie. The proprietor never charges the officers for their orders. Some people think this practice is acceptable; others think police officers should pay like any other customer of the restaurant. What is your view of the situation?
  7. Provide at least 2 professional and/or academic recommendations from individuals knowledgeable about your preparation and qualifications for graduate education (the email addresses of your recommenders will be requested during your online application process.)

Optional Application Requirements

Graduate Assistant Application. Assistantships cover tuition, fees, and student medical insurance, as well as a monthly stipend for students who work within teaching and research areas within the department. The GA positions are awarded on a competitive basis and require full-time presence in Laramie for the academic year. If interested, please submit your application to the School of Politics, Public Affairs & International Studies. Graduate Assistantship applications received by March 15th will receive priority consideration for the following academic year. Applications are accepted year-round, on a rolling basis, however, applications received by the March 15th deadline will receive priority consideration in the assistantship award process.

Deadlines

We accept applications year-round, but usually cut off admitting about 2 weeks before the beginning of the semester or when the program fills. This usually turns out to be:

  • August 15th for Fall
  • January 1st for Spring

If you are close to these deadlines for admitting, please contact the department (mpa.info@uwyo.edu).

Additional International Student components required by the Office of Admissions:

  1. Confidential Financial Aid Statement delivered to the UW Admissions office.

  2. The University of Wyoming's institutional minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 540 (76 iBT); the minimum acceptable IELTS score is 6.5.

IELTS and TOELF scores must be sent to Admissions directly from the testing agency to be considered official.

The following are TOEFL/IELTS alternatives for evaluating English proficiency.

  3. Foreign students, who are non-native English speakers, must pass the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). Information regarding OPI waivers for native English-speaking applicants can be found here.

The MA Admissions Committee may recommend provisional admission, including specific coursework to be completed, if a student's background is deemed insufficient, but will not consider any form of admission without a complete application.

Application Decisions

Once all materials have been received, your application is complete. After an evaluation of all credentials by the MPA admissions committee, the director will send a recommendation to the Graduate School to admit or deny.
