Public Administration Program

School of Politics, Public Affairs & International Studies

Joint MPA/JD Degree

Students must be successfully admitted to both the Law School and the MPA program. Application requirements are the same as MPA students, though MPA/JD students are allowed to substitute their LSAT score in place of the GRE.

Program of Study

Students must complete the core and option-core elements of the MPA Degree Requirements, but may apply up to 3 courses (9 hours) in place of 3 of the 4 required electives. The Law School may approve up to 3 MPA courses (9 hours) to the Law transcript with advisor approval.

All Graduate Faculty Regulations will apply to all the courses on the MPA/JD degree Program of Study and students will be required to finish the same graduation requirements as all other graduate students.

Degree Conferral

  • Two separate degrees will be posted with a note at the bottom of the Graduate Transcript indicating the number of law hours accepted as electives toward the joint MPA/JD degree. Two separate diplomas will be awarded.
This note is necessary because a student using the maximum allowed law hours as electives will not meet the 30 cumulative hours on the Graduate Transcript required for a master's degree as required by Graduate Faculty Regulation.
This will be the only indication on the student's transcript that they were pursuing the joint degree.
