String players in 6th - 9th grade are eligible to audition.

Fall: Monday, September 11, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Spring: Monday, January 29

Auditions take place in BCPA 1050

Audition Requirements

  • Scales (violins): G major, two octaves; B-flat major, one octave
  • Scales (violas): C major, two octaves; B-flat major, one octave
  • Scales (cellos): C major, two octaves; B-flat major, one octave
  • Scales (basses): G major, one octave; B-flat major, one octave
  • Sight reading: a short excerpt will be provided at the audition
  • A solo for your instrument; first violinists must demonstrate an ability to play in third position or higher

A solo is a piece of music for your instrument alone or with piano accompaniment; you will not need to play with a piano for your audition. Orchestra and ensemble music with multiple parts are not considered solos. Consult with your teacher if you are unsure of what to play.

Suggested solos:

  • Violin and viola: Suzuki Book 2 or higher
  • Cello: Suzuki Book 1, Minuet #2 or higher
  • Bass: solo of your choice

Participation in a public school string program is required for all Sinfonia members who attend schools with string programs.


Mondays from 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm in BCPA 1050

Registration and Tuition Fee

$40 tuition (includes a $5 registration fee and a $5 material fee; cash or checks payable to "UW String Project")

There is no additional tuition for String Project students.
