2022 Peer Mentor Job Description
 
1) Ability to work with both students and staff:
  •  Maintain professional composure when dealing with a variety of issues concerning students (e.g., issuance of violations for rule infractions, helping w/papers, etc.) and/or UW Native American Summer Institute staff
  • Establish and maintain a trusting/compatible relationship with program participants while respecting individuality and cultural values
  • Serve as a positive role model for program participants
  • Be available for team members and assorted UW Native American Summer Institute needs
  • Supervise high school students living in UW housing (UW Residence Halls)
  • Be on-call on a 24-hour basis and reside in the dorms with the summer institute participants
  • Work supportively with the faculty and other staff of the UW Native American Summer Institute and attend required meetings as scheduled prior to the start date of the Summer Institute
2) Leadership qualities.
  • Plan and conduct evening & weekend program activities for participants
  • Participate as team member by attending team meetings
  • Participate as a group leader in daily activities
  • Become familiar with UW Native American Summer Institute rules and procedures and enforce as needed
  • Possess an above average knowledge of UW programs and resources
  • Be familiar with the campus and be able to guide students through the system
  • Maintain and display a positive attitude towards goals and objectives of the program
  • Be a team player with other professional staff and be willing to help in demanding situations and presenting a united front to student participants
  • Chaperone all excursions along with recreational activities throughout the week of June 5-11, 2022.
  • Be available to travel with the Summer Institute Staff to the Wind River Reservation on (Sunday) June 5, 2022 and (Saturday) June 11, 2022 to pick-up/drop-off summer institute participants
3) Communication:
  • Advise UW Native American Summer Institute Staff of all pertinent and essential events and situations through open, frequent, and immediate (if necessary) communication
  • Work cooperatively with requests from the UW Native American Summer Institute Staff, UW Housing, other Peer Mentors, and other summer institute personnel
  • Be a team player with other professional staff and be willing to help in demanding situations and presenting a united front to student participants

Eligibility:
-Current UW Student (undergraduate or graduate) or a recent UW graduate and not be enrolled in any summer courses that conflict with the dates of the institute June 5-11, 2022.
-Ability to pass a University background and motor vehicle vehicle record check.  Must be comfortable and able to drive a UW fleet vehicle at various time during the week.
-Must be able to work longer than normal hours and at any point in the day
-Preference will be given to applicants with a background and familiarity with Native culture, experience with Native communities, individuals with a K-12 educational background and other factors as determined by the hiring committee
Peer Mentors report to:
-UW Native American Program Advisor, Reinette Tendore, located in the Native American Education, Research and Cultural Center, Room # 113
Period of Employment:
-Scheduled Meetings throughout the Spring Semester prior to the UW Native American Summer Institute 2022
-June 5-11, 2022
Pay and Benefits:
-Peer Mentor will receive $1500 upon completion of the UW Native American Summer Institute
-Lodging and Meals for the week of June 5-11, 2022
