Examples of Applied Research: Creating research to enhance and improve clean coal technologies, with an emphasis on the use of sub-bituminous coal at high altitudes; studying gasification of Wyoming coal, and the conversion to liquid fuels and lubricants; developing new methods to recover more oil from old reservoirs; developing a computer simulation of a coal-to-liquids plant; working with the Wyoming Department of Health to enhance quality of patient care and providing education for health care providers; researching viral diseases that affect cattle, swine and horses; studying the role and economic importance of private lands in providing habitat for big game; testing for West Nile virus and its impacts on wildlife; developing a program to increase the number of nurses working in Wyoming; analyzing the small and upland game harvest survey methodology; developing strategies for controlling chronic wasting disease for its detrimental effects on the deer population; assessing the threat of introducing exotic plant species into the natural environment; studying agricultural plant disease-causing agents; collaborating with the Bureau of Land Management on various projects; providing primary health care to diverse individuals and families in rural settings; developing a program for a growing elderly population in the state; helping limited-resource families eat more nutritionally and economically; providing information on food handling safety measures; providing data, training and computing resources for farmers to use satellite data for monitoring and managing Wyoming agricultural lands; evaluating status, risks and vulnerabilities of Wyoming's private forest and agroforest resources; surveying for a variety of alcohol/tobacco use and underage drinking projects; surveying; researching Wyoming's open spaces initiative; developing a program to promote an educational base in science, math, engineering and technology from the elementary grades through college; providing manufacturing, technology and other companies with counseling, training and resources to help businesses grow; developing a program to identify and treat substance abuse issues in Wyoming.
