Oct. 23, 2006 -- The Wyoming Library Association recently presented its 2006 Distinguished Service Award to Anne Marie Lane, curator of the Toppan Rare Books Library at the University of Wyoming American Heritage Center. The award recognizes Lane's service and significant contributions to Wyoming libraries and the library profession.
Lane, who has served in her position since 1994, was the first UW faculty member to be honored with the title of full archivist. She is an active member of the Wyoming and national library communities, where she serves as a member of the Wyoming Library Association's Academic and Special Library section, and the American Library Association's Rare Books and Manuscripts section. She is a member of the Early Books Society, and next summer will present a paper in England on 15th and 16th century manuscripts. She also reviews art history books for Library Journal.
Tamsen Hert, associate librarian at Coe Library, nominated Lane for the award. Maggie Farrell, dean of libraries, says Lane is a "model for librarians and archivists in promoting open access to materials and even access to rare books," making Lane a standout in her field. Lane said this collegiality from her colleagues at UW made receiving the award more meaningful.
Originally trained as an archaeologist, Lane later obtained a master's degree in library science from the University of Arizona at Tucson. While working with the special collection library there she discovered her passion for rare books.
"From the first day that was it. I walked in and smelled the leather and age of the books and because of my background, I knew it was a perfect fit. I love books as artifacts of the past as well as for their intellectual content," she says.
