Dec. 4, 2006 -- The University of Wyoming has named its newest agricultural research center for UW alumnus and state representative Jim Hageman, who died in August, shortly before the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) near Lingle was dedicated.

UW President Tom Buchanan announced the naming at today's (Monday) meeting of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association and Wyoming Wool Growers Association, in Casper.

During the August dedication, Buchanan said that, "Jim Hageman was a true son of Wyoming. He was dedicated to the state's tradition of agriculture, education and service.

He was devoted to sustainability in higher education and also devoted to the sustainability of the land. He was a lifelong rancher, vitally involved in the UW College of Agriculture and the UW School of Environmental and Natural Resources. His voice was prominent in legislation supporting SAREC. Jim was a true friend of UW and he will be missed."

The UW Board of Trustees approved the naming at its October meeting.

"The trustees' decision to name SAREC in memory of Jim Hageman was unanimous," says Buchanan, "but we wanted to announce the naming at the most appropriate time.

It is fitting that we do so here, now, among his many friends in Wyoming's agriculture community. Jim's contributions to UW and Wyoming farming and ranching will forever be enshrined at this outstanding research facility."

SAREC comprises 1,522 acres of dry land cropland, 349 acres of irrigated cropland, 1,880 acres of rangeland, 19 acres of irrigated organic cropland, 40 acres of dry land organic cropland, a feedlot and a livestock research laboratory. A dormitory for researchers and a wet lab are planned additions. The dry land, irrigated land and livestock systems in one location will allow insights into how best to use resources.
