Aug. 9, 2005 -- For the past 28 years, W. Dan Hausel has been teaching karate and jujutsu to students at the University of Wyoming, and more than 5,000 students and black belts from all over the world have trained under him during the past 35 years.

Hausel is not only a grandmaster and the top-ranked martial artist in Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate (an Okinawa style of karate), but he is also certified in more than 18 arts.

In recognition of his contributions to the martial arts, Hausel was inducted into the World Martial Arts Black Belt Hall of Fame and awarded the coveted Grandmaster of the Year award in the city of Kuching in Sarawak, Malaysia on July 31. This was the 11th Hall of Fame to induct him since 1998.

Judy Song, World Martial Arts Hall of Fame registrar, accepted the award and induction in Hausel's absence since he was unable to attend due to previous commitments. Song Swee Hee, president of the International Martial Arts Research Institute in Malaysia, presented the award and induction notice at the banquet.
