Dick Cheney is currently Vice President of the United States. Early in his political career, Cheney was Assistant to the President for Gerald R. Ford (1975-1977). After that, he served as a U.S. Congressman from Wyoming (1979-1989). He then became the U.S. Secretary of Defense, serving from 1989 until 1993, a period when he oversaw Operation Desert Storm and the Persian Gulf War.

From 1993 to 1995, Cheney was a senior fellow of the American Enterprise Institute, and he is former chairman and CEO of Halliburton Corporation, an international energy services and engineering company.

Cheney earned both a B.A. (1965) and an M.A. (1966) in political science from the University of Wyoming. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Michigan State University. 

Cheney serves as a member of the UW College of Arts & Sciences Board of Visitors and the Campus Advisory Board.

Cheney received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991.
