Harold H. Gardner attended the University of Wyoming from 1956 to 1958, during which time he played on the Cowboys basketball team. He received his M.D. from the University of Rochester Medical School in 1965, completing his post-doc clinical training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Strong Memorial Hospital and University of Rochester. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 until 1968.

From 1971 to 1984, Gardner was employed by or affiliated with several academic and health care institutions, including the University of Rochester, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rochester, the Medical Group of the Genesee Valley Group Health Association, Wayne State University, and Mount Sinai Medical Center.

A pioneer in the creation of the health maintenance organizations, Gardner cofounded Primary Prevention, Gardner & Associates, and Options & Choices, between 1984 and 2002. He is also the founder, owner, and president of the Health as Human Capital Foundation (HHCF).

Gardner is currently an adjunct professor in both the UW College of Health Sciences and College of Business and sits on the College of Business Advisory Council.

He is also the founder, owner, and president of Human Capital Management Services, Inc. (HCMS), a UW affiliate.
