General Peter Schoomaker began his U.S. Army career in 1969 as second lieutenant, a position which was commissioned through the UW Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. He went on to complete the Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia, in 1976, and earned a master's degree from Central Michigan University in 1977.
From 1978 to 1981, the Detroit, Michigan, native served as commander of the Army's 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment. He retired at a four-star rank in 2000 after serving three years as the commander of U.S. Special Operations Command. He was the 35th U.S. Army chief of staff, serving from August 1, 2003, to April 10, 2007.
Schoomaker was inducted into UW Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997 for football as a member of the 1967 WAC Championship Team.
He resides in Fort Myer, Virginia.
