Bill Stall began his professional journalism career with the Laramie Daily Boomerang while he attended the University of Wyoming, where he worked as sports editor and reporter (1956-59). He went on to report in Cheyenne, Wyoming; Reno, Nevada; Sacramento, California; and Hartford, Connecticut, before joining the staff of the Los Angeles Times in 1984. Stall spent most of his time at the LA Times as an editorial writer, but also worked as a political writer (1990-97).

Stall also worked as a senior lecturer in journalism at the University of Southern California from 1984 to 1992. He served as bureau chief and political writer with the Associated Press in Sacramento (1966-74), and was press secretary and director of public affairs for the California governor's office (1975-76).

He was part of the LA Times staff presented with the Pulitzer Prize for local reporting of spot news for coverage of the first day of the Northridge, California, earthquake in 1994. He won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing in 2004 and currently works at the Sacramento bureau.
