She was named UW Distinguished Alumna in 2003.

Nancy E. Gwinn joined the Smithsonian as assistant director for library collections management in 1984 and became director of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries in 1997.

She has held several leadership roles in her field, including chair of the Association of Research Libraries Committee on Preservation of Library Materials and elected secretary of the Standing Committee on Preservation and Conservation of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutes (IFLA).

Gwinn's book, Preservation Microfilming: A Guide for Librarians and Archivists, won the 1988 Waldo Gifford Leland prize of the Society of American Archivists.

Gwinn majored in English at UW and went on to receive a Master's of Library Science from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in American civilization from George Washington University. She is also a former Fulbright scholar at the University of Oxford in England.

Gwinn currently resides in Washington, D.C.
